Dr Bawumia’s Desperate Attempt to Sideline Islam for his Presidential Ambition Is Very Worrying and Disheartening

Religion, according to studies and experience, plays significant roles in politics especially in Africa.

In Ghana, the most populated religious sects are Christianity and Islam. Christianity is mostly dominated by the Akans (Southerners) while Islam is mostly practiced by non-Akans, and very predominant at the Northern part of the Country.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) knowing the roles that religion plays in our contemporary geopolitics, has a political convention that, whenever a Presidential Candidate is selected from the South (Christianity), a Muslim from the North is automatically selected as a Running mate and vice versa. It is believed that, joining both the South and the North with different religious backgrounds and philosophies on a ballot paper stands a greater chance of winning the Party an election as well as governance of the Country.

Since the inception of the 4th republic, this has been the common practice of the New Patriotic Party.

On 29th day of July, 2022, it could be recalled that, Mr. Aziz Futa, the National Nasara Cordinator at the Friday Thanksgiving Service of the NPP, was pushed by the leadership of the Team Bawumia to attempt a religious bigotry agenda that could incite Muslims against the New Patriotic Party, but failed woefully, due to the disapproval by the majority of Muslims across the Country, who felt that, such an injurious motive only had the tendency to divide Ghana, a country that has always enjoyed religious harmony.

However, Dr. Bawumia, sensing his unpopularity among the Islam society through the failing of his attempted religious bigotry agenda, amidst his monumental failure in the management of Ghana’s Economy, and foreseeing his least chances of winning the flagbearearship against the well performing Ministers like Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and others, has craftily adopted another new sinful strategy of sidelinig Islam for the Christian faith.

When he eventually succeeded in lobbying to be selected to speak at the launch of the 175th Anniversary celebration of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana (EPCG) in Accra on Sunday, July 31, 2022, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia indirectly disclosed that he was an active member of the Christian faith, and that, had his mother not converted to Islam by his father, he would never had joined the Islam faith.

So in effect, Dr. Alhaji Bawumia is telling the world that, he was forced into the practice of Islam, and that, he never wished to abandon his so-called Christian faith.

As a matter of fact, Dr. Alhaji Bawumia made a lot of comments that were in plane contradictions of the Islam principles and teachings.

Since the video of those infamous statements of his came out, the set of questions that keep running through the minds of our fellow Muslim Youth are;

Is Dr Alhaji Bawumia a true practicing Muslim?

Did Alhaji Bawumia actually say that, just because, he desperately wants to be accepted by the Christian dominated majority to achieve his presidential ambition?

Or he simply said that because the National Nasara Cordinator’s inimical agenda didn’t see the light of the day?

Our simple advice to the Vice President is that, he is a very fine material for our Muslim community, and that, he should refrain from allowing desperations to cost him the love we have for him. He should rather be focused on redeeming his lost image as an economic wizkid and allow the NPP to select a suitable and a more performing flagbearer for the Party for the 2024 Elections, so that, he can have his turn in the future when he has had his image well redeemed.
