Government develops new guidelines to protect water bodies – Hon. George Mireku Duker

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is making arrangement to establish security post at the vantage points of our water bodies.

As part of measures to prevent people from mining on water bodies, river guards and naval command have been stationed on the river banks to monitor and enforce the laws on offenders.

In  a bid to solve the incessant pollution of water bodies by illegal miners, government has put in measures to establish security post around the river banks.

River bodies have been officially declared “Red Zones“ for mining in the country and officials from the ministry of lands and natural resources have suspended prospecting and exploration in forest reserves except in exceptional circumstances.

However, there some recalcitrant groups which are still operating on the country`s forest reserves and water bodies , thereby making the rivers unsafe.

At a fact finding meeting with the members of the districts mining committees in Ashanti Region and other stakeholders in Kumasi, the Deputy Minister of lands and natural resources, Hon George Mireku Duker, said a number of measures have been put in place to solve the issue of mining on water bodies.

He expressed serious about the destruction of water bodies by the illegal miners.
